Business Culture in Mexico
Anybody considering visiting or relocating to Mexico should familiarise themselves with the cultural norms.
Mexico is home to about 130 million people, a diverse cultural heritage, and a wealth of natural resources, making it one of the world’s top 15 economies and Latin America’s second largest. The country’s trade policies are liberal, and the country’s macroeconomic institutions are robust.
Mexico has large labour unions, which are allowed in a workplace if 20% or more of the employees are members. Collective agreements are reviewed every 2 years.
Here is a flavour of the rules and standards of conduct that newcomers to Mexico should be aware of:
Get to know people who know people. You may need a reputable Mexican contact to introduce you to potential business partners. Because you're judged by your contact, picking the proper individual is crucial.
Bring senior executives to initial meetings. You can expect Mexican senior execs to attend initial meetings, To honour Mexican culture, bring an executive of equal status.
If you're still creating a commercial relationship, negotiations can take a while. Deadlines are often adjustable "target dates." Your rival may promise to deliver something "mañana" (tomorrow), but they may mean soon.
