Pensions in Mexico

There are three parts to Mexico’s retirement income system: the 65+ means-tested old-age pension, the obligatory defined contribution system with a guaranteed pension, and additional individual and workplace private plans.

It’s also worth noting that many levels of government, including the federal government, the states, and even public colleges, all have their own separate pension schemes.

The pension reform passed in December 2020 sets the normal retirement age for men and women alike at 65, with the amount of time needed to accumulate sufficient funds for retirement set at 750 weeks (roughly 14.4 years) beginning in 2021 and increasing by 25 weeks annually until it stabilises at 1,000 weeks in the private sector.

Mexico Healthcare Benefits

IMSS and Seguro Popular provide public healthcare in Mexico. Most medical services and prescription drugs are covered. Mexican workers are automatically enrolled in IMSS and have their contributions deducted from their pay. Those who are not employed can voluntarily enrol in the IMSS system and pay an annual contribution fee.

Although most doctors in Mexico understand English, the application process and most public healthcare administration are in Spanish. While public healthcare in Mexico is good, hospital quality varies, and employees may wait a long time for non-emergency and specialist procedures.

Private insurance and service providers run clinics and hospitals. Private insurers charge premiums for voluntary coverage. Employers can offer private insurance with shared premiums and expenses. Risk profile and agreed-upon health services determine premiums. Private hospitals might offer more specialised operations and better care.
