Netherlands Pensions
The Dutch pension system consists of three pillars.
First Pillar – The basic state pension (AOW), accrued by all residents at a rate of 2% per year, regardless of employment status. It provides a basic minimum income to everyone after retirement.
Second Pillar – Company pensions. They may be company-specific or industry-wide, funded by employers and employees. Second-pillar pension programs encompass most workers since the government can require membership across sectors and industries.
Third Pillar – Individual private pension schemes. These are voluntary, and mostly used by people who are unable to access second pillar pensions schemes.
Major reforms of the Dutch pension system are currently underway. This is currently expected to come into effect in July 2023, with gradual changes being effected over the course of several years.
Netherlands Healthcare Benefits
The Netherlands implemented a dual healthcare financing system in January 2006.
The government automatically insures Dutch citizens for WLZ (Long-Term Care Act). This covers long-term therapies, particularly those requiring semi-permanent hospital care, as well as the cost of disabilities like wheelchairs.
ZWV, sometimes known as “basic insurance,” pays for all routine (short-term) medical care. All people who live and work in the Netherlands are obligated by law to independently procure and pay for one of these basic plans. Insurers must provide a universal package to everyone over the age of 18, and they may not charge extra for premiums on the basis of age or health status.
All employers must make contributions towards these mandatory insurance schemes, with some opting to provide additional private health insurance for their employees.
