How does Payroll in
New Zealand work?

Pay your staff once a month

Salaries in the New Zealand are paid once per month, and in 12 equal instalments. There is no requirement to pay a 12 or 13th month and it’s neither customary to do so in New Zealand.

Discretionary bonuses

Bonuses are generally defined as discretionary, and therefore not required to be placed in the contract of employment.

National minimum wage

New Zealand has three different tiers for minimum wages.

Training – NZ$16.96 per hour. This applies to employee’s aged 20 or older who have an employment contract stipulating industry training worth over a certain amount of credits per year. Typically, this applies to formal apprenticeship schemes. This does not apply to people completing standard training necessary to perform their job.

Starting-out – NZ$16.96 per hour. This applies to 16 and 17 year olds who have not yet completed 6 months of continuous employment, and to 18 and 19 year olds who have also not completed 6 months of employment, and are also in receipt of certain social security benefits.

Adult – NZ$21.20 per hour. This applies to all other employees who are 16 years or older.

Payrolling the employees is a key part of the service offered by an employer of record company. The EOR will calculate and remit all taxes, social securities and similar payments, on behalf of both employer and employee. The client will be invoiced in advance by the EOR company, for the total cost of the payroll.

Yes. Our clients are free to dictate the structure of the employees’ remuneration including any bonuses or commissions they wish to offer. In some countries, there is a statutory requirement to provide “bonuses”, for example in the form of Christmas or holiday allowances.

Yes. Agility EOR will calculate what pay is due upon termination of an employee, factoring in such things as any untaken leave entitlements.
