Work Culture in Norway

Anybody considering visiting or relocating to Norway should familiarise themselves with the cultural norms. 

Norwegians are modest and egalitarian. Self-promotion is impolite. Exaggeration is frowned upon in direct, honest communication. Norway’s management style is comparable to other Western countries. Consensus is sought, but the boss decides.

Here is a flavour of the rules and standards of conduct that newcomers to Norway should be aware of:

Speak in clear, simple English. Although most Norwegians speak great English, English idioms don't translate well and may be confusing.​

Mean what you say. Sincerity is important to Norwegians. Glib niceties such as “lovely to meet you” or “we must get together some time” tend to sound disingenuous and superficial to Norwegian ears.​

Despite its proximity to the other Scandinavian countries, Norwegians do not like to be mistaken for their neighbours. Don’t assume Norwegians are like the Finns, Danes or Swedes.​

Don’t be late. Being punctual shows decency and respect for others. If you’re unavoidably delayed, let people know you’ll be late, and apologize.

The EOR will calculate and remit all taxes, social securities and similar payments, on behalf of both employer and employee. The client will be invoiced in advance by the EOR company, for the total cost of the payroll.

Yes. Our clients are free to dictate the structure of the employees’ remuneration including any bonuses or commissions they wish to offer. In some countries, there is a statutory requirement to provide “bonuses”, for example in the form of Christmas or holiday allowances.
