Swedish Culture and Business

Anybody considering visiting or relocating to Sweden should familiarise themselves with the norms of Swedish business culture.

Sweden is the largest of the Nordic countries. With a population of just over 10 million, Sweden’s major cities are home to the vast majority of its citizens. In addition to having a robust economy, Sweden also boasts one of the world’s highest living standards. Sweden is home to numerous major manufacturing and natural resource companies in addition to its thriving knowledge industries.

Sweden’s highly developed export-oriented economy is supported by its abundant resources of timber, hydropower, and iron ore. These are the backbone of a trading-based economy’s resources. Vehicle manufacturing, telecommunications, pharmaceuticals, industrial machinery, precision equipment, chemical products, home and consumer appliances, forestry, and iron and steel production are also important.

Even if they don’t belong to a union, most Swedish workers have the protections of a collective bargaining agreement. Many aspects of employment law that are regulated at the national level in other countries are covered by these agreements.

The Do's and Don'ts of Working in Sweden

Working Hours in Sweden

8 hours per day, 40 hours per week is the industry norm. Monday through Friday constitutes the typical workweek. You can negotiate to have overtime pay rolled into your base salary, but it’s not required.

In the absence of a collective agreement, the Working Hours Act governs working conditions in the workplace. This translates to no more than 50 hours of overtime per month and a total of 200 hours of overtime per year. If employees are required to work overtime, the company must keep a log that specifies the number of hours worked, as well as whether or not they were paid for them.

Regular hours plus overtime should not add up to more than 48 hours per week on average over the course of four months. Employees  need at least 11 hours of sleep per night (uninterrupted rest) and at least 36 consecutive hours of rest per week (not counting standby time).

Yes. Agility EOR will calculate what pay is due upon termination of an employee, factoring in such things as any untaken leave entitlements.

We find that most of our clients are in the Tech, IT, Finance and Professional Services industries. However, we have acquired the skills, knowledge and experience to help all industries across the globe.

As a private company, we’re not beholden to shareholders or asset-shredding Private Equity targets. We aim to build long-term relationships with our clients. At Agility EOR, our approach is that we never forget that our business is all about people. Our Employer of Record solutions are tailored to each requirement, not a one-size-fits-all tech platform. We do the right thing by our clients and by the laws of each country we operate in. And we believe in openness; if we don’t feel we can offer you the best solution for a specific territory, we’ll say so.

We pride ourselves on our personable-approach so once you enter your new employees details into our dedicated platform, we’ll arrange a call with you to go through the details of the employment contract where together we can review and amend to your requirements. We liaise directly with your employee to build a rapport and obtain the necessary information to hire them compliantly, and set them up ready for their first payroll.

We never stop delivering! Even if you’re employee has been onboarded and is happily working for you and being paid each month, we’re here to partner with you whenever you or your employees need us. Even your ex-employees may need our assistance for tax documents, proof of employment requests etc… Our service never stops!
