Sweden Employee Benefits - Pension
Private pension plans, both for employees and employers, are widely used in Sweden. As well as being one of the more highly desired Sweden employee benefits, a private pension insurance plan is typically required for non-EU citizens to obtain a work visa in Sweden.
Employer-provided supplementary pensions are voluntary in Sweden, but have rapidly become the norm for many workers. After an employee has passed their probationary period, a private pension is often made available to them. They could expect to pay anywhere from 5-10% of their gross pay each month.
Employee pays 7% of their salary into the state pension system, but receives a proportional tax relief. Combined with the employer’s 10.21% – Pension Insurance, this forms the state pension, (allmän pension), and is approximately 18% of an employee’s total salary.
In addition to the state pension, other voluntary pensions schemes are common in Sweden. These include:
- Occupational pension (tjänstepension): offered to employees by the company. In most cases, it amounts to 4.5 percent of the worker’s annual wage. More than 90% of Swedish businesses provide this benefit, and any firm that does so is obligated by law to provide it to all of its employees.
- Private pension (privat pension): Employer and employee contributions are both accepted in this private supplementary pension plan.
Sweden Healthcare Benefits
Sweden has national insurances and has universal health care, which is mostly supported by local and regional taxation.
Sometimes, if an employee is a member of a union, the CBA may mandate that they provide private health insurance. Although rare that this is classed as a must have Sweden employee benefit, private healthcare in Sweden is usually part of a larger package that also includes pension and other protection benefits.
Private health insurance allows patients to avoid waiting for reimbursement from their government-funded counterpart, as well as to pay for medical care immediately rather waiting for reimbursement of out-of-pocket costs.
