Are there regional variances for public holidays across Spain?

There are 8 official, nationally observed public holidays and additional local holidays determined by autonomous communities and municipal councils. Employees are entitled to the public holidays based on where their work activity is carried out. There is an annual limit of 14 public holidays. Each year, the 8 national, mandatory holidays will be declared. These may vary if dates fall on a Sunday. Autonomous communities will then select up to 4 additional regional holidays or substitute dates. Municipal councils may add up to 2 additional local holidays.

Do public holidays in Spain fall on the same date each year?

Each October, the list of public holiday dates (both national and autonomous communities) are released in the Official State Gazette (Boletín Oficial del Estado). This determines the dates for the following calendar year.

Are bank holidays paid in Spain?

Employees are entitled to up to 14 paid public holidays each year. These are non-recoverable.

Are public holidays on non-working days substituted?

Substitute dates are determined each year. Public holidays which fall on non-working days will not automatically be substituted, but autonomous communities may provide an observed date that falls on a working day.
